An interview with Samantha Malcolm, REALTOR® and Owner of Sold by Samantha at Keller Williams Arizona Realty.

 

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in the local area.

 

I am originally from the New York and New Jersey area. I lived on Staten Island, then moved with my parents to Freehold and Manalapan Township, New Jersey. For six years I lived in New Jersey before I moved to Arizona in 1995. For college I chose to attend Arizona State University and graduated with a Degree in Special Education. I realize I have spent most of my life now in Arizona, and I love it here!

 

After graduating, I went on to teaching for a few years at high schools, special education, and GED in Phoenix. My husband is in the Commercial Real Estate business and he suggested I look into Real Estate for my career. I received my Real Estate Salesperson’s license in 2000. Since obtaining my license, I have been with Keller Williams Arizona Realty for the past 22 years.

 

My husband and I started our family a few years after I got my license, and we have five beautiful children: McKenzie, 16; twins Liam and Katie, 11; Maddie, 7; and Chase, 6. With our growing family and the responsibilities of caring for twins, my career in real estate proved to be the right choice. I needed something that would let me have greater flexibility for my professional life and my family life, while also letting me find success in an exciting career. Luckily, I have been able to find the right balance so I can be present for my husband and children. I can also provide my clients with excellent service.

 

2. What brought you to Keller Williams Arizona Realty?

 

I had just obtained my Real Estate Salesperson’s license and I was interviewing with different brokerages. I was about to accept a position at another brokerage in town, but the person who was interviewing me went on vacation. A schoolmate told me that I should check into Keller Williams Arizona Realty with Jim Dunning.

 

I ended up choosing to work at KWAZ and have been extremely happy. In fact, the person who was interviewing me from that other brokerage later joined the leadership team here! So, I thought that was a good sign, and I feel fortunate that I chose the right place.

 

3. What do you like most about working with the KWAZ team?

 

I love the team! Everything about working here is terrific. The leadership team is always accessible, Kate Matteson and Jim Dunning are super-helpful especially when I have complicated transactions. Everyone is always positive when I come into the market center, and this is a big reason I have stayed with KWAZ.

 

The team is very supportive of me, especially during the time when I had the twins and could not make it into the office very much. I feel a great amount of connection and I receive a tremendous amount of support. As a result, this helps me to be successful in my business.

 

4. Do you have a favorite client story you would like to share where you believe you helped them the most?

 

I have a lot of great clients. Most of my business is from young families, since that is the demographic where we also reside. But recently I helped two families that have been in their homes for over 30 years. One of the families really struggled with the transition, and the other was very excited for their future. I think of it as a great honor to be part of their experiences. It is quite a process they have to go through, clearing out a home after so many years. I can only imagine what it would be like when it comes time for me to do that at my home.

 

How I Found My Own Home

 

Speaking of my own home, this leads me to my best story: I literally found my home at a yard sale! I just happened to be in a neighborhood that I always liked and came upon a yard sale. I do tend to be a very friendly and talkative person, and so I asked the homeowner how much he wanted for his house. He took me in to let me see the inside of the house, and he gave me an outrageous price. I saw that he was a hoarder, and I learned that he was facing foreclosure. I also found out his wife had filed for bankruptcy.

 

With all of this knowledge, I went back to him to make an offer that would be helpful for him to prevent the specter of foreclosure. With everything that was going on, the financing was crazy and the transaction was quite involved. However, it became the best transaction I have had in my entire career.

 

 

5. What is the secret to your success?

 

I am very creative; my brain always sees how I can figure things out to make things happen or to get things right. Ultimately, I am willing to try just about anything, and I’m not afraid of getting the door slammed in my face.

 

I tend to be a very good listener for all types of conversations, not just about real estate. I look for ways I can help people build their lives and create strong relationships. Ultimately, I consider myself to be a very “out of the box” thinker. My first approach is always “how can we get this done?”

 

 

6. If you could give one piece of helpful advice to a new real estate agent, what would that be?

 

Stay focused on your real estate activities, NOT the results!

 

I have to remind myself to remember this on a daily basis. Without the activities, there will be no results.

 

7. Where will we meet Samantha Malcolm in the future?

 

I think I will always be in the real estate industry. I recently opened an office in the community I serve. My goal is for the office to be functional whether I am here or not. I love what I do!

 

I also want to spend about half the year here in Arizona, and half the year at a beach. Any beach in Mexico will be perfect for me.
